“The flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil may set off a tornado in Texas.” While this may the subject of be of various scientific debate, and is used when talking about the chaos theory, it does offer a philosophy: actions have far reaching impacts.
A way to capitalize on this is to realize that this applies to everything that you do. Now, for many things, we may not see any far-reaching impacts., e.g. sorting our mail. When we realize how many actions do, or can, we are really planning helping to enrich ourselves, our surroundings, and the lives of others.
For example, a programmer can spend his time working freelance, earning $10-$25/hr.
Or, he could create a website that provides a service for free to private users.
Which one will make more of a difference to him in 2-3 years time?
It is doubtful the $10/hr job would be much of a springboard to advance his career, his pay scale, or the value he can offer, but the service website could be collecting subscription fees, ad commissions, etc. These payment would enable the programmer to put more time into making the website even more valuable to people.
When one starts to think this way, they then notice how they could be using their time, or orienting their activities to provider much more benefit in the long time.
We should ask ourselves: Will this action have an effect on my life or those of others in 2-3 years time? If not, could it be changed so it will?
