Don’t re-act, pre-act!

Take a good, hard look at what you have spent your time on the past few days. How much of that time can you confidently say was spent pro-actively - on actions designed for long term impact?
Now count up how much time was spent responding reactively. How long did you spend answering phone calls, emails, physical mail, and most importantly handling the ever present crisis that came up?
Do you have a plan for next year? 5 years? 10 years? How much time, if any, do you spend on making sure those plans are moving forward?
In short - do you have goals for the future, or are you just reacting to what goes on around you? When you start thinking towards the future, your priorities shift and new options appear.
Think about what you want to accomplish this week. You may have thought about some mini project, or some phone calls and situations that you had to deal with.
Now think about what you could do in 5 years. Thoughts about a new house, starting a business, or switching careers may have popped into your head. These options aren’t even on the radar if you are thinking only about the coming week!
Do you see what happens when you just STOP to think about the future? Not next week, but 5 or 10 years ahead.
Figure out what you want to happen, and start spending more time on it!
